The Empty Seat

Feb 15, 2026    John Harris

The sermon explored how David's unjust suffering at the hands of King Saul foreshadows the innocent suffering of Jesus Christ. Through 1 Samuel 19-20, we saw how God was already telling the story of His Son's suffering centuries before Jesus walked the earth. David's experience—being condemned despite his innocence, receiving violence in return for faithful service, and being driven away to suffer alone—became a prophetic window through which we see the greater King who would come. This reflection prepared our hearts to approach the communion table not merely as ritual or symbol, but as genuine participation in the body and blood of Christ through His Spirit. The implications for our spiritual life are staggering: the innocent King suffered completely so that we would never be condemned, never be alone, and always have a seat at His table.
