The Willing Savior

The sermon explored the account in Mark 1:40-45, in which a man with leprosy approaches Jesus and asks to be made clean. Using the cultural, theological, and symbolic weight of leprosy in the Old Testament, the message drew a direct parallel between the leper's condition and our own spiritual condition as sinners. Just as leprosy rendered a person unclean, isolated, and cut off from God's presence, sin does the same to every one of us. The great news of this passage is that Jesus is not merely able to cleanse us — he is willing. He moves toward sin and suffering rather than away from it, and he demonstrated the ultimate willingness by trading places with us on the cross, taking our sin upon himself and giving us his righteousness in return.
