When Jesus Speaks

The sermon explored Mark 1:21-28, where Jesus enters a synagogue in Capernaum on an ordinary Sabbath and leaves the entire room unable to explain what they had just witnessed. Through four figures in that room — the scribes, the demon, the crowd, and the afflicted man — we examined what it means that Jesus taught with a kind of authority the world had never encountered. The scribes had sound doctrine but could not speak for God. The demon had precise theology but was headed for destruction. The crowd was genuinely amazed but walked away unchanged. And the man on the floor, who had nothing to offer, was the only one on whom anything was actually done.

The central claim of the passage is that Christ's authority leaves nothing unchallenged — not our religion, not our hidden sin, not our emotional responses to him — and that the hope of the room rested entirely on what Jesus did, not on what anyone brought to him.
