Beholding the Gift of Jesus' Departure

Dec 28, 2025    John Harris

What if the most devastating goodbye in history was actually the greatest gift we could receive? This exploration of John 14-16 challenges us to reconsider what we thought we knew about Jesus' departure. When Christ told His disciples it was 'to your advantage' that He go away, they must have been bewildered—how could losing their Teacher, their Master, their Friend possibly be good news? Yet here we discover the beautiful mystery: Jesus' physical departure made way for something far greater—the Holy Spirit's universal presence. We learn about the concept of the 'paraclete,' a Greek word meaning 'one called alongside to help,' which John uses to describe Jesus Himself as our advocate in heaven and the Holy Spirit as our advocate on earth.

This isn't just theological abstraction; it's deeply personal. Right now, Jesus stands before the Father presenting His blood as our defense, while simultaneously the Spirit dwells within us, interceding with groanings too deep for words when we don't know how to pray. We're invited to understand that the Spirit doesn't just comfort us after battles—He equips us for them, driving us into spiritual warfare just as He drove Jesus into the wilderness. The Spirit applies Christ's finished work to our unfinished lives, making His 2,000-year-old victory our present reality today. This message calls us to embrace our identity as witnesses—not merely to do witnessing as an activity, but to be witnesses as our core identity, empowered by the indwelling Spirit to come alongside others just as Christ came alongside us.
